Montecristo is the best known and perhaps even the most appreciated cigar branded by Habano. One could say that Montecristo is used to reference all other Habano cigars.
The name originates from the novel "The Count of Montecristo" by Alexandre Dumas.
In the tobacco factory of H. Upmann in Havana, where the brand was created in 1935, a reader read the novel to the cigar rollers working there, the novel was so well received that it was decided to name the new brand after the name of the main character the novel. Hence the name Montecristo.
The historical range of Montecristo was originally composed only of the vitolas with numbers 1 to 5, and gradually the series was expanded into a range that covers the tastes of even the most demanding smokers. In 2004, a new model was added: Edmundo, which is a thicker model and 2 years later, the line was completed with the Petit Edmundo. The name Edmundo comes from Edmond Dantes, the main character of the Dumas novel.
In 2009, the Montecristo Open cigars came on the market with four new vitolas. These had a more softer blend compared to the other Montecristos. This particular line was developed for the new generation of starting smokers.
Its tobacco mix consists exclusively of special selected leaves from Vuelta Abajo, where the best tobacco in the world is grown, the two mixes, one with medium to full flavor, and the second of the Open range, has slightly more flavor, an excellent aroma that can keep both the most experienced smokers and newcomers in the Habano brand satisfied.
