How to smoke a cigar? And how do you light it? Did you know that you can’t light your cigar with every fire? The foot of the cigar should be lit using a butane lighter or a long wooden match. Avoid the use of candles, paper matches and lighters that use lighter fluid called naphtha. The chemicals used in those lighters can ruin the taste of the tobacco.
When you want to use a wooden match for lighting your cigar, please wait until the sulfur burns off before lighting the actual cigar. Never let the flame touch the cigar. The way to light your cigar is to hold the flame about three inches from the foot of the cigar. Then rotate the cigar around the flame until the foot ignites You can blow on the foot to get an even burn. Let it sit for a minute to stabilize. After that you will notice that the outside wrapper and binder will have a white, ashy look. That way you will know that you’ve properly toasted your cigar.
Up next you want to ignite the filler. Use the long wooden match for a larger flame area, that way you can light the foot evenly. Put the cigar between you lips and hold the match about half an inch from it with the flame drawn in. The rotate the cigar as you puff it.
When you’re puffing it, a surge of flame shoots up from the foot and a puff of smoke will come from your mouth. The cigar is lit! Enjoy!
A cigar that has been let go can be lit again, but you must first knock the ash and blow the cigar through. If you put the cigar away, never put it out in an ashtray. Keep the cigars in a place that isn’t too dry and preferably in a humidor.
Some questions and answers about cigars:
Only if the packaging says 100% tobacco, the cigar consists of 100% tobacco, both inside and outside and wrapper, if the packaging says Natural or HTML, the wrapper is pressed tobacco residue.
The Dutch cigars are short fillers which are made from small pieces of tobacco and can consist of a blend of sometimes more than 20 different tobaccos. A long filler is hand rolled from whole tobacco leaves, the medium filler consists of the cut tops of 1 up to 4 inches of the long filler cigar, it is a very easy to smoke cigar.
The houses in the Netherlands are almost all well insulated and the CV often causes the air to be too dry for our cigars, which then will burn too quickly and will have a sharp taste, (a common problem with cigars that are bought along the highway in a shop with a relative humidity that is far too low). A humidor is the solution for this issue, the relative humidity for Dutch cigars is about 55%, the long filler cigars between 70% and 75%.
